About the Founder

Dr. Maré Vlok is a seasoned biochemist with over 20 years of experience specializing in proteomics and protein chemistry. He earned his PhD in Biochemistry from Stellenbosch University, where his passion for the intricate world of proteins began. Throughout his career, Maré has established himself as a leading figure in the field, contributing significantly to the scientific community with 26 publications, over 9,000 reads, and more than 1,000 citations, resulting in an H-index of 14. The H-index is a metric that measures both the productivity and citation impact of a researcher’s published work, highlighting Maré's notable contributions to his discipline.

From 2014 to 2024, Maré served as a Senior Analyst at the Central Analytical Facility (CAF) at Stellenbosch University, where he independently managed the Proteomics lab. His expertise in running complex proteomic analyses positioned him as a go-to professional for cutting-edge research. Prior to this role, he was the Proteomics Platform Manager at the Centre for Proteomic and Genome Research (CPGR) from 2007 to 2014, where he oversaw advanced proteomic projects and collaborated with researchers across various disciplines.

Maré's dedication to education is evident from his time as a lecturer and co-supervisor of biochemistry students at Stellenbosch University while completing his PhD from 2005 to 2006. His commitment to nurturing the next generation of scientists underscores his passion for biochemistry.

In late 2024, Maré founded Trace Labs, where he now operates as an independent contractor specializing in biochemistry, proteomics, and LCMS data acquisition and analysis. This entrepreneurial venture reflects his deep understanding of industry needs and his drive to provide innovative solutions.

Outside of his professional pursuits, Maré enjoys a fulfilling personal life with his wife, Claire, whom he met on campus a decade ago. They reside in the northern suburbs of Cape Town, sharing their home with four beloved dogs. In his free time, Maré is an avid DIY enthusiast, particularly enjoying electronics and network-related tinkering. Their home is now run entirely via various Google devices, showcasing Maré's knack for efficiency and practicality. This blend of professional expertise and personal passion makes Maré a respected figure in the scientific community and a cherished partner in life.
